Glossary
Action - the amount bet by a casino user while playing.
Anchor - the card player sitting to the right of the dealer. He/she is the last player to play before the casino dealer. He/she makes the last decision before the dealer plays out the hand and thus the name. The decision made by the anchor player at a blackjack table can have a significant effect on all players hands at the table.
Ante - the minimum bet that each player must place into the pot before a new hand begins.
Baccarat - a casino card game. To win one must have a hand that is closest to 9 discounting all units of 10.
Banker - the player who books (notes) the other player's actions at the table. (relevant to the game of Pai Gow) - the other players bet against "the banker". Also a term used in many games for the player/dealer who controls "the bank" (the money) and usually deals the cards.
Bankroll - your complete sum of money for one playing session
Bar the 12 - changes the twelve to a push on the 'don't pass' bar (relevant to the game of craps)
Base - the space on the dice table where most of the bets are set and paid.
Base Dealer - casino dice dealer who is in charge of one of the bases
Bet - gamble or wager
Betting Limits - on a single bet, the smallest or biggest amount of money that can be laid
Betting Right - wagering with the shooter or on the pass line in craps
Betting Wrong - betting on the Don't Pass Line or against the shooter in craps
Blackjack - a game of cards. In this game the players try to beat the online casino dealer by getting closer to 21 than the dealer. This game is also known as 21.
Blackjack Hand - when a hand's first two cards equal a sum of 21.
Blind Bet - a wager that users must make because of their betting position.
Bluff - users fake having a strong hand when in fact they have a weak hand with the hope of driving out players with a stronger hand (relevant to poker)
Box - the scope of the dice table controlled by the boxman. It is also the area where users place the center bets (relevant to craps)
Boxcars - Slang term for when a roll of two die both turn up sixes. Originated in the game of craps. Rolling two sixes looks like train tracks; henceforce, the term boxcars (from a freight train).
Boxman - the online casino dealer, who is in charge of the craps table.
Bring-in - this is the bet that the online casino user with the lowest face-up card must make in the first round of betting.
Bump - raising a bet
Burn Card - any card which is not entered into play but placed in the discard rack. Generally, after shuffling and cutting the deck, one card is burned.
Bust - term used in blackjack if your cards add to over 21 (you lose). This is also known as break.
Card Counting - a strategy used primarily in blackjack that helps decrease the online casino house odds by counting the number of high and low cards dealt out
Caribbean Stud Poker - a game of poker using five cards and all the players play against the online casino house
Chips - tokens used instead of money for betting
Cold - a slot machine that one continually loses at or a user who continues to lose
Complete Hand - a hand of poker containing all five cards. (straight, flush, straight flush, or full house)
Craps - a term for the roll of dice for the following numbers: 2, 3, or 12.
Credit Button - a click-button in online casino poker that the user can click on to bank the money he as won and to use these to play without having to pay more
Crew - dealers of a game of dice or craps
Croupier - dealers (the online casino if playing online) of roulette and baccarat
Cycle - in video poker it's the statistically predicted average number of hands dealt per top jackpot, usually a royal flush.
Cut - after shuffling the cards, dividing the deck of cards into two and inverting them
Cut Card - a plastic card used to cut the deck or a different colour card
Online Casino Dealer - the online casino netservice that deals out the different games
Dice - two or more equally numbered cubes
Die - singular for dice, a cube with numbers 1-6 on each side.
Discard Rack - area of the table where the used cards are placed.
Don't Come Bet - a bet placed on the Don't Come Bar. Same rules as the Don't Pass Line except it is placed after the Come-Out Roll.
Don't Pass Bet - a bet placed prior to the Come-Out Roll that a seven will be rolled before a point is repeated.
Don't Pass Line - area of the table where the Don't Pass bets are placed. Also known as the Back Line.
Double Down - to increase a wager after the first two cards are drawn, in exchange for receiving only one more card, by placing an amount equal to the original bet on the layout. Also known as Double Up.
Dozen Bet - a bet on twelve numbers in roulette, i.e. 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.
Draw - in draw poker, the second round of cards that are dealt.
Draw Button - allows video poker players to draw up to five new cards.
Drop Box - on a gaming table, the box that serves as a repository for cash, markers, and chips.
Edge - the online casino's higher odds over the player in any game
Even Money - a wager that if you win gives you back the amount you wagered at your favourite online casino plus your original bet
Expected Return - in online casino poker it's the average cash figure you can win on a set play for a set type of wager
Expected Win Rate - a percentage of the total amount of money wagered that you can expect to win or lose over time. Face Cards - the king, queen or jack of each suite.
Flat Top - those slot machines which have a fixed amount as jackpot
Float - the online casino bank.
Flush - a five-card hand of the same suit relevant to poker
Fold - when you, the online casino user, decides not to bet and drop out (relevant to poker)
Four Of A Kind - four cards of identical rank (popularly called quads)
Full House - a hand made up of a pair and a triple (relevant to poker)
Full Pay - generally the best win system offered for a particular game (relevant to online casino poker)
Hand - all the cards that you hold
Hit - to ask and receive an additional card. This card is also called a hit.
Hole Card - the online casino hidden and unseen card
Inside Bet - betting on a single number including 0 or 00 or any such combination (relevant to roulette)
Insurance - a side bet in blackjack that's offered when the dealer's upcard is an ace. If the dealer has a blackjack, the bet is paid 2-1. If the dealer does not, the insurance bet loses.
Let It Ride - After winning a bet, leave the original bet plus the winnings on the table for the next bet. Similar to "Pressing the bet". There is also a poker game with the same name of "Let It Ride".
Loose/Tight Slots - refers to slot machines with a larger or smaller payoff tendency
Mini-Baccarat - a mini version of baccarat. Few online casino players play this version but follow the same rules as baccarat
Monkey - local term for a card that equals ten
Natural - In Blackjack, an ace and a card that values ten in the original hand. In Baccarat, an eight or nine received in the first two hands.
Non-negotiable - a promotional chip that one cannot cash in
Nut - a fixed amount that an online casino gambler sets out to win.
Odds - ratio of statistical probabilities or the amount a bet pays
Off - bets that are not working.
One-Roll Bets - wagers that win or lose depending on the next roll of the dice.
Outside Bets - roulette bets located on the outside part of the layout. They involve betting 12 to 18 numbers at one time and result in a lower payout.
Pair - any two cards that are equal in sum or rank
Palette - the flat spoon-like instrument used by dealers to scoop cards on the baccarat table
Pass - to abstain from betting
Pot - the accumulated cash in the middle of the table. The online casino winner takes it all.
Press the bet - Add an additional amount to an existing bet on the table - common term used in the game of craps. I.E., a bet in "the field" can be pressed (increased) on each successive roll of the dice. Most commonly it means to double the existing bet - similar to "letting it Ride".
Punter - an online casino player.
Push - this signifies a tie or a standoff. This happens when the users hand and the online casino hand have the same total. Neither is declared the winner and the money doesn't change hands
Qualifier - this is the minimum criteria that a hand must meet to take part in the online casino pot (relevant to poker)
Raise - in poker,an online casino player raises by matching the previous bet and then betting more, to increase the stake for remaining players.
Rake - the online casino fee charged for playing a hand of poker. Generally it's a percentage (5-10%) or flat fee that the online casino takes from the pot after a round of betting
Rank - a cards worth
Royal Flush - an ace-high straight flush (the best possible hand - relevant to poker)
Soft Hand - signifies a hand that contains an ace that can be counted as 1 or 11 (relevant to blackjack)
Stand - to decline accepting another card
Steal - to win the online casino round by bluffing (relevant to poker)
Straight - hand which has five consecutive ranked cards (relevant to poker)
Straight Flush - hand of five consecutive ranked cards of the same suit (relevant to poker)
Stud Poker - a poker game with no card draw
Surrender - to decide to drop out of the hand because of weak cards. This means that you lose half of your bet but you get to save the other half (relevant to blackjack)
Three Of A Kind - three cards of the same rank.
Token - the casino coins used to play slot machines either at a land-based or at an online casino.
Triple - three of a kind (relevant to poker)
Two Pairs - hand made up of two pairs and a single card (relevant to poker)
Upcard - A card that is dealt to a player or the dealer face up, so that all players may see it. For example, the card of the dealer's initial hand in blackjack which is dealt face up.
Wild Card - a joker or other card that any online casino player can use as any other card to complete your hand.
Whale - an online casino player who gambles with a lot of cash
